Weekly Meetings

Page history last edited by nesterov@dennisnewson.de 14 years, 6 months ago

October 9 18:00 GMT

I was the only person there, plus a large number of advertisements which I, personally found obtrusive. What would SL be like if we all started advertising in public places? Carol IMed and caame over. Randall appeared in the sandbox and we went over to see what he was up to. He was trying out his amazing castle. See the pictures below.

Next week, I'm on the road. Any volunteers to look after next week?

Osnacantab, born Dennis

Randall's castle 1

Randall's castle 2

Where is it?  He keeps it in a box, of course, it is a holodeck.

25 September 18:00 GMT  Sandbox, as usual

I've just got back from a 5-say trip to England and am still trying to re-construct, altering as I go, myy Meditation Tower - which perhaps needs re-naming. If and onl if it is of any general interest whatsoever, I can show you 'worek in progress' and get your advice on some of the difficulties. Bute.....

Agenda:  Open

Who will be attending

Osnacantab...

Ah,

I've just noticed that there are two pages:

Weekly meetings

Weekly meetings being archived/noted

and that our accounts are split between the two. I'll try to see if I can collate them, bring them together.

ALSO, apologies for not having yet posted photos from last week's fashion show. I've been having trouble with keyboards - and time management.  :-)

I look forward eagerly to the forest, and hope to soon be able to introduce you to:

Meditation Tower

The creator of Dogme Gardens, a place to meet and communicate, is putting the finishing touches to Meditation Tower. Go up in the sky, sit with your back to monument made from a Dutch tile depiicting a cow and its owner, stare at the sea and think calm thoughts.

Dennis

On this page you can find information about our weekly inworld meetings, list of participants (add yourself!) and a summary of the meetings.

Important: The entries on this page are in reverse order (latest on top) to avoid scrolling. This is not the case for the comments, however, as this is programmed by Pbwiki and we cannot change this (unfortunately).

Meetings in August/September:

I just wanted to remind everybody that this wiki is a collaborative effort to share what we know, learn more about teaching and learning in SL and collect resources. You can add information to the existing pages or create new pages if you see fit. Now is your chance to also help moderate the wiki (Ask me, Maru or Alicia for more info if you'd like to help with this), help update this page and keep the meetings going. I will be less active here during August/September because of Ramadan. Maru and Alica, the other moderators are busy and Dennis, who I made a moderator without even asking him :) will be happy to have help. Thanks! (Nergiz)

Meeting October 2nd 2009

Hi everyone:

Here is the summary and an attached file with the chat log. I'm sorry I cannot edit the wiki to add it myself, I get the same error in each page I try to edit.  I'll check in other wikis I belong and I'll let you know.

[Attached file follows aafter breakfast!]  Dennis

In the mean time, Could anyone post it for me please?

See you next Friday.  Besos.  Maru

Who attended:

Lynn Carlucci

Mmvcentro Jewell

Maika Giordano

Eurominuteman Jameson

Ann Monitor

Lyn and I were alone for an hour and our conversation drifted to what we're passionante about: Teaching and learning regardless the venue or tool used. We used voice.  Maika and Eurominuteman showed after she left.

Lynn invited us to a great project!  She'll post the summary with a proper invitation next Sunday 4th. Do join!  It's a great opportunity, you'll see.

[7:01]  Lynn Carlucci: Hi

[7:01]  Lynn Carlucci: How have you been?

[7:02]  mmvcentro Jewell: fine, thanks. many activities. How about you?

[7:02]  Lynn Carlucci: keeping busy :)

[7:02]  mmvcentro Jewell: It seems we are all in the same boat, will that be a teacher's flaw? LOL

[7:03]  Lynn Carlucci: I think so

[7:03]  Lynn Carlucci: hard to say no to all the interesting things :)

[7:03]  Lynn Carlucci: But, I wasn't able to participate during the buddy builder thing

[7:03]  Lynn Carlucci: so don't have anything to hand over tonight

[7:03]  Lynn Carlucci: just came along because I could make the time for a change

[7:04]  mmvcentro Jewell: I couldn't participate either

[7:04]  ling Markstein no está conectado

[7:04]  Lynn Carlucci: A couple of losers :0

[7:04]  mmvcentro Jewell: LOL

[7:04]  Lynn Carlucci: I'm trying to find EFL teachers of young learners to guest blog for me

[7:04]  ling Markstein está conectado

[7:05]  Lynn Carlucci: Do you know anyone who might like to tell their teaching story?

[7:05]  nahiram Vaniva está conectado

[7:05]  mmvcentro Jewell: how old are your students?

[7:05]  Lynn Carlucci: Mine?

[7:05]  Lynn Carlucci: I teach children and adults

[7:05]  Lynn Carlucci: but what I'm trying to do is collect stories from teachers in different countries and teaching situations

[7:05]  mmvcentro Jewell: yes, the age of the students you need help to blog with

[7:05]  Lynn Carlucci: No.

[7:06]  Lynn Carlucci: I'm looking for teachers to write guest posts about their own experiences

[7:06]  Lynn Carlucci: Where they teach

[7:06]  Lynn Carlucci: who their students are

[7:06]  mmvcentro Jewell: I misunerstood. So. you need teachers of yourng learners to share their teahing situations

[7:06]  Lynn Carlucci: what it's like in their country

[7:06]  Lynn Carlucci: yes

[7:07]  Lynn Carlucci: here's my blog address: www.teachingvillage.org

[7:07]  Lynn Carlucci: there's an introductory post called "Stories from the front lines of EFL"

[7:07]  Lynn Carlucci: and one post from a teacher in Turkey

[7:07]  Lynn Carlucci: She uses tech with her kindergarten students

[7:07]  mmvcentro Jewell: I'll check it out and see if I can contribute}

[7:07]  mmvcentro Jewell: thanks for the invite

[7:08]  Lynn Carlucci: but I've got another teacher posting this weekend who doesn't use tech

[7:08]  mmvcentro Jewell: I see

[7:08]  Lynn Carlucci: I'm just trying to collect stories--they're all good :)

[7:08]  mmvcentro Jewell: interesting topic

[7:08]  Lynn Carlucci: Thanks for any help

[7:08]  Lynn Carlucci: Yeah, it feels sometimes like people like me (not Japanese, but teaching in Japan)

[7:08]  Lynn Carlucci: write about teaching children

[7:08]  mmvcentro Jewell: it's a good idea to open our minds to different experiences

[7:09]  Lynn Carlucci: and people generalize that everything in that country is like I say

[7:09]  Lynn Carlucci: but most teachers of children are Japanese, and our experience is much differnt

[7:10]  Lynn Carlucci: I hope that if I can publish a lot of different stories from different teachers, we can all get a better idea about what's real in our profession

[7:10]  mmvcentro Jewell: could you explain a little more? I got confused, does a story about teaching adults fits in?

[7:10]  Lynn Carlucci: I'm focusing mostly on teachers of children

[7:10]  Lynn Carlucci: kindergarten through high school

[7:10]  Lynn Carlucci: because those are the voices we don't hear very often

[7:11]  Lynn Carlucci: The idea of the "front lines" is that children's teachers work on the front lines (like a battle)

[7:11]  Lynn Carlucci: they're the first exposure to English students have

[7:12]  mmvcentro Jewell: O.K. I understand now. Have you asked Dennis? He teaches chilldren, I've worked as English teacher with adults, with teenagers I've worked f2f in one to one basis

[7:12]  Lynn Carlucci: No, I haven't. Is he teaching children now?

[7:12]  Lynn Carlucci: Teenagers are fine, too

[7:12]  Lynn Carlucci: If you'd like to participate

[7:12]  Lynn Carlucci: or, if you are training teachers

[7:13]  Lynn Carlucci: I think stories about teacher training would be useful, too

[7:13]  mmvcentro Jewell: He's retired but he surely has stories to share. I'm training teachers so I'll have a look to your blog

[7:13]  Lynn Carlucci: Please.

[7:13]  Lynn Carlucci: I'll talk to Dennis, too

[7:13]  Lynn Carlucci: I would love to have you share

[7:14]  Lynn Carlucci: I have a teacher trainer from Greece, and a teacher trainer from Japan so far

[7:14]  mmvcentro Jewell: let me see if I can open the browser without crashing to have a peek

[7:14]  Lynn Carlucci: It's interesting to hear how conditions are different in various countries

[9:06]  mmvcentro Jewell: Bye now

Update from Lynn (aka Barb):

This isn't strictly a SL project, so I apologize for posting it on this wiki page--Maru thought I should. And I would love to include stories about teaching being done in SL (especially, but not limited to young learners--I think SL EFL is definitely a front-lines-of-EFL kind of story!)

Here is the explanation about the guest blogging project Maru and I talked about. Since this day's summary has become long (with the chat log), I'll post in my favorite pretty pink!

I recently started blogging, as a way for me to learn more about using web 2.0 tools, and as a way to encourage teachers to use the internet for professional development. I'm still pretty new and figuring out what I'm doing, but I'm having fun and learning a lot :)

Now, I have a question for you.....

I'm starting a blog series that focuses on EFL for young learners around the world. Rather than looking for generalizations about EFL in any country, I want to focus on specific teachers, or specific schools in order to paint a more accurate picture by looking at the small bits that make up the picture. (Sort of like that Indian fable of 5 blind men describing an elephant by touching different parts of the animal)

What I envision is a teachers introducing their classes, or school. What they do with their young learners, what their background is (private school? public school?), how this situation is similar to or different from what is typical in that country, with pictures! But actually, I'm happy to see this go in any direction, if teachers want to talk about other things.

Would you like to be part of this project? Do you know of any teachers who might like to be part of this? If they aren't confident about writing for publication in English, I'm happy to edit before posting or even to do this as an interview.

You can read the original post introducing the series (including a link to a google doc with guidelines) here:<a href="/http://www.teachingvillage.org/2009/09/16/stories-from-the-front-lines-of-efl/" target="_blank">Stories from the Front Lines of EFL</a>.

The first two posts in the series are now up, so if you'd like to see examples, I invite you to read <a href="/http://www.teachingvillage.org/2009/10/01/teaching-kindergarteners-in-turkeyenjoying-every-minute-of-it-by-ozge-karaoglu/" target="_blank">Teaching Kindergarteners in Turkey: Loving Every Minute of It </a>by Özge Karaoğlu or <a href="/http://www.teachingvillage.org/2009/10/07/teaching-middle-school-students-in-south-korea-by-dayle-major/" target="_blank">Teaching Middle School Students in South Korea</a> by Dayle Major.

I hope you'll consider adding your voice to this project. I have high hopes for it!

Friday 18th.

Oh dear. I'm sorry that I was not around today. I'm so orientated to my time zone that I tend to forget others, and this week was due to be at the early slot. Did anyone meet? Do let us know if you met.  (And a gentle reminded: ANYONE can call a meeting.)

I've had a few PC problems the last weekm but I have images from last week that I can nowsned or place online. I'll keep you informed.

1. Cyber Placebo (I will be in between the Eurocall 2009 Virtual Strand and SL so bare with me if I come and go) I can talk to you about the mistakes I made with my first room. (see pic below)

2. Anna Begonia. If you want, I can show you my last Italianiamo activity, explain you how i did it, give you scripts and elements if you want to use some of the parts to prepare one yourself for your students. (to see what it is about: http://italianiamo.wordpress.com/2009/09/08/giochiamo/ it's in italian.. use google translator ;o)

3. Nagora Yakubu. I will definitely join this time. It was a hard time of the  new academic year - was dead busy. I'd like to learn more around with such a wonderful SL community. Thank you everyone for keeping informed here.

4. Mariosolde Orellana (Marisa)

5. Maru del Campo (Mmvcentro) I'd love to hear about Cyber and Anna's experiences. Thanks for the offer.

6. Rian Staheli--also interested in Cyber and Anna's experiences. (I picked up a few cool tools from NMC Learn island-L$1 and would like to share if time).

7. Karelia Kondor (Helen Myers) - experienced Anna's wonderful lesson first hand - a 'MUST  SEE'!

Nergiz: I'd just like to thank those who kept the SLExperiments meetings going during my absence, especially Dennis, Cyber, Anna, Carol and the others who have been active. This a sign for me that the meetings are benefitting members and that a community has formed.I'd like to encourage all members to participate actively. When you have an idea for the agenda, want to invite a guest, demo something, etc, simply add it to the agenda and lead that session if you want. Set up a meeting if nobody else has done it yet and if you want to set up one on another day for some reason, feel free to do that, too. We have so many members from so many different time zones now that it's impossible to find a time and date that suits all. Although, I do like to have one regular time in general.

Also, if you want to add resources/links to existing pages or want to create a new page, do so, as long as it is at least broadly related to our topic(s). If you want to make pages look nicer, you are very welcome to edit them.

Remember that we also have an in-world group, which you can use to send out group notices to which you can add objects, notecards and landmarks for all members. If you don't know how, ask here or in the next meeting :)

If anybody has some spare time, we need somebody who could collect all the Builder's Buddy scenes and put them in boxes and then in Dudeneyge's shop and maybe also in the resource centre of EUROCALL. Make sure your scene has the "clean" button when next owner wants to use it (test it with someone).

I'll probably be away for another two Fridays but I will read my email and the summaries of the weekly meetings :)

Have fun!

Osnacantab born Dennis will be there and will gladly seek answers to some of the questions that have arisen as he builds THE TOWER!

Friday 4 Sept

Was anyone except me not there? (That's a sort of joke.....)

As happens to me, I mixed up appointments  and would not have been able to be there even if there was a meeting.

It would be good for posterity, though, if someone wrote a note if people did meet.

And please remember you are all entitled to call a meeting, post a notice here.

Introductions led by Cyber.

What is the difference between builder's buddy script and linking objects? Linking is to link several prims to form an object comprising several prims for e.g a sofa while builder's buddy script is used to link severa lobjects together so they have the same behaviours.

Cyber has created her first platform (a lounge) ... is willing to demo this, but linked all prims so needs to unlink everything, and relink prims as part of objects and add builder's buddy script to all objects so they remain together.

Cyber is working on creating several environments to link to holodecks.

Dennis is building- thanks to Carol who helps at every stage.

Cyber keen to create a language learning centre (works in one) on SL for allowing uni students from around the world to meet each other - need to consult with the uni's marketing department for branding. The idea is brewing. (watch the space! )

Suggest rent some land from Edunation - then use the Edunation facilities to invite groups and have guest speakers

Advantages of Edunation: Clean, quiet, serious - this is necessary to get credibility from a university

Dennis described his several homes

One is in a very elite neighbourhood (Nik Peachey as a neighbour... (he does 'a coffee with ..'))

Discussed the fact that men seem to need to build homes (contrast with Carol who prefers to be in the open!)

We asked to visit his homes, and our wish was granted.  And so we began the GRAND TOUR of the estates!

DENNIS' FIRST PLACE:

Osnacantab's Place, EduNation III (176, 230, 22)

It has:

  • television (ironic that Dennis doesn't watch TV in RL!) [to stop, edit/preferences/media]
  • chairs/settees - made by Denis

  • picture of Dennis
  • Damani Media -e.g. google - key in local chat [advantage = able to access internet .. no need to upload images/video you need in to SL .. you can jointly se Flickr / YouTube etc]

Gavin Dudeney has a very generous approach to supporting those who rent land from him e.g. acquiring and installing media (praise of Gavin and Carol a recurring theme in this meeting!)

Tip re: seeing things more clearly ... alt (cross) .. left click / scroll click on object

Each house allocated a certain number of prims (primitives) - if exceeded, slows down for the whole neighbourhood

Teaching tools box from Gavin - goes straight into your inventory

Internet radio - Cyber will look for some French radios:

FRENCH RADIOS

Young Adults, music

The most famous (really)

http://www.nrj.fr/radio-510/ check the link to "NRJ all French" to listen to live, this is very good actually to keep up with French new music

http://www.alouette.fr/zenon/HomePage/index_1200.php (I suspect a lot of songs are in English though)

http://www.resonance.com.fr/index.php

More links to music radios to try:

http://www.comfm.com/radio/liste-c-120-l-1-p-1.html

More serious and cultural stuff (for higher levels) :

http://www.radiofrance.fr/ (many radios to choose from and programmes podcasts to download with Itunes and listen again) France Inter being the biggest and that is where I download my programmes mainly.

Learn French with RFI:

http://www.rfi.fr/lfen/statiques/accueil.asp

Teleporters - free - Nina loves them! (Cyber can pass you a free Amazon teleporter)

DENNIS' SECOND PLACE:

Virtlantis slengli

House in the sky

Welsh wall constructed to feel 'safe' and avoid falling off!!

Many flowers

Key thing for holodeck = everything must be copiable by someone else

Carpet is carpet from home

SL a place of fun and communication ... a potentially great place

Wall of the pub next door which is going to be pulled down

Building very simple - basic shape, stretch, fill with texture

Tip: to take pictures without disturbing others through action / sound: advanced / quiet snapshots to disc

Tip: alt + print screen - takes a shot of the whole window instead of the whole screen

Nina successfully uploaded a picture to the wiki, featuring the four of us on a bench. General rejoicing when achieved.

Discussed Macbeth site.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Macbeth/48/52/55

Discussion about how to persuade people of the benefits of SL

- having the technical capability of movement and language

- place provokes language

- not necessary to have your own place .... you can teach in public places (Key point from Anna Begonia)

- not exclusive - 'blended learning' is the sane approach

Problem with SL

- lack of control - unreliable still

- Nik Peachy misses eye contact (not sure if they're bored .. or even if they are there ...)

DENNIS' HOUSE NUMBER 3

Virtlantis 43, 109, 21 - a more 'industrial' environment

He has built a tower so that we can see the sea.

Denis waxed lyrical about the experience of Berlin Philharmonic earlier in the evening .. we felt very honoured to have taken precedence for the final third of the concert, but of-course missed Carol who took over from him!!

Denis and Cyber continued talking into Denis' night and Cyber's morning ....

Helen/Karelia went to a live concert with new-found friend (Tip: Search / category / live music)

Discussed the possibility of meeting up at other times when individuals unable to attend the Friday meetings.

Messages prior to the meeting:

I have missed many meetings  and I have been busy with RL but I am back to hear what everyone has been up to. Was delighted to meet Anna Begonia by chance last week and she showed me how to link objects, probably the most useful skill ever!! . I was very impressed with what Ann built (following the minutes of last meeting and I am keen on learning more scripting for building environments for holodecks. But first things first. I will be in the sandbox - having breakfast at 6am here in NZ-, if no one shows up to try some of the skills Anna showed me. Cyber :-)

I was unlucky to be away at some weekends when our meetings were held. I hope to see some of you guys this Friday :-). Also, looking forward to seeing the new skills, Cyber :)

Pawel

Osna

Lucky enough to meet Cyber this morning when she flew on to the tower I'm building  I HOPE to be able to attend, but there is probably the inevitable clash. The Berlin Symphony Orchestra, under Sir Simon Rattle is broadcasting live, sound and vision, their first concert of the season is a virtual concert hall. There were 500 tickets available and I got one.

I've no idea if there are any tickets left, but this is the site where you can judge if your system is good enough to receive streamed classical music from Berlin!

From Nina's photo you know who we are. This is how my camera saw us.  (Osna, born Dennis). Taken in the front garden of my hut in the Virtlantis sky. (a present from Carol - the hut, not the sky.) Where is my avatar's foot? Good question - no available answer).

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Just noticed no-one has made an entry for today.

Topic?  Under the circumnstances - Whatever comes up. Hate having missed the exchange of objects Marisolde describes. (Great to have an account. Without it how would we absentees know what went on? Thanks Marisolde?).

I can only stay for about 30 minutes because I have a pupil coming. (I don't feel I can ask him to come one week one time and one week another). I hope, though, that I won't be sitting at our meeting point alone.

Until soon?

Dennis ... Sorry: Osnacantab

I attended late to say I could not stay and returned after an hour and a half and remained for a while.

I found three (?) people in the sandpit, Anna and....and Georgio joined later. They were building a sort of arch. We chatted and then I rezzed Dogme Gardens to make sure the holodeck still worked. It did, but I'd placed the box rather high off the ground, unintentionally, and avatars had a bit of difficulty getting in.  After clearning up the roses I'd strewn over our bit of the sandbox I had to leave again. I think the others may have gone off to virtual Assisi, and Georgio was due to go there today, with a school group in the heat. Anything to add, anyone?

Remember - next week at the later time. (See Dates and Times of regular mettings in the sidebar).

We gathered at the usual place for meetings, Osna, Ann Monitor, Anna Begonia and Mary Roussel. We started talking about Ann´s experience about building in SL. Anna Begonia invited us to the sandbox to help Ann build an unexpected arch. I think that Ann Monitor practiced some SL skills: building, creating, resizing, using the camera controls, and of course, learning to give some textures to her beautiful arch; she really kept herself busy while Anna Begonia and I were sitting comfortably watching and guidind her on her hard work.

Then, Anna´s friend, Giorgio joined us. The gathering ended up with a visit to the famous church in Italy called San Francesco Assisi. Giorgio kindly gave us the excellent tour to this place, and the information he shared with us was extremely valuable for me. Food for thought!!!,  and definitely an eye-opening experience to encourage people to keep learning about the history of this magnicificent place. (Mary Roussel)

Friday 14 August, 2009 11 am SLT/PST (6 pm GMT)

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Agenda: Open. Any ideas?

Who is planning to attend ?

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil) --> might be my last one for a couple of weeks
  2. Nina (Nagora)
  3. Pawel (Pawlus) --> added Friday 5 pm GMT: unexpected family visit. I will try to drop in for a moment :)
  4. Tamas (Mash) --- My first time. Might still not have sound but will log on to see what's going on.
  5. Marisa (Marisolde Orellana)

Who is  attended

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil)
  2. Nina (Nagora)
  3. Pawel (Pawlus)
  4. Tamas (Mash)
  5. Marisa (Marisolde)
  6. Carol (Carolrb)
  7. Anna Begonia
  8. Shawn

It was a good meeting although at the beginning we were all trying to help Tamas sort out his sound problems and then I had sound problems too - but thank god Carol was there and she helped me sort them out!

As usual, we exchanged interesting objects. I now have a lot of very nice trees should I ever wish to make a clearing or compete with Dennis and his beautiful Dogme garden and Carol gave me a garlic amulet to wear against Vampires! I was surprised how my grnadmother's old superstitions have slipped into the high-tech wolrd in SL! Apparently the script in the garlic stops them! I don't know if getting bitten by a vampire is a serious business, but I am not taking any risks.

My contribution was "the Pig that Flies" which is fab but moves so fast when I go on a ride that I either get tangled up in the shrubbery or end up at the bottom of the ocean and off-world.... I was also given a camp-fire or two and Nagora offered us all coffee from a dream tub, the kind I often imagine myself diving in, being a total coffee addict!

Then there was building practice. Carol helped me make a very very basic stool which didn't look that great but meanwhile Shawn started making this great reclining chair and helped me make one too! I felt so proud of this first object I had to take a couple of snapshots and here they are!

Here is the famous chair. I look a bit uncomfortable perched up but I don't yet know how to include the script that makes you relax on a chair.

My special beach chair - not much I admit, but a first for me nonetheless! You can also see the campfire in the background. and my new anti-vampire amulet.

Thank you all and hope to see you again at the end of August as I will be going off to my small, unnamed Greek island soon!

Friday 31 July, 2009 11 am SLT/PST (6 pm GMT)

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Agenda: Open

Who is planning to attend ?

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil)

Who attended:

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil)
  2. Carol (Carolrb)
  3. Shawn (Shawn)
  4. Anooja (Ann)

Today, we were looking at several interactive maps.  My expectation was that this would generate simple conversations of the sort, "Where are you from?" and "Have you ever been to...?"  However, the conversation that was actually generated was much richer.  For instance, as a result of the maps, we ended up talking about multi-lingual households, multi-lingual cultures, the politic correctness/incorrectness of Turkey being omitted from the European map.  It never ceases to amaze me how, sometimes, even very simple objects can stimulate people so much.  (Shawn - 7/31/09)

Shawn or someone - could you post details of the maps  you looked at?

Shawn writes:  "It never ceases to amaze me how, sometimes, even very simple objects can stimulate people so much."

Shawn, my take on that is that it is the people that are amazing. Some people can speak interestingly about almost anything!

Dennis - sorry, Osnacantab

Marisolde: Oh Sounds like a great meeting and am really sorry I missed it!

Pawel: oh, me too! Any details about the maps, please? Or where can we see them? Sounds VERY interesting!

Friday 24 July. There is either a meeting in half an hour, or there was one this afternoon that I missed.

The following for me and all others who can  never remember which week is which time.  I HOPE I've got it right, but it is the idea that counts!

DATES and TIMES of regular meetings 2009

--------------------> Looks correct to me, Dennis! Sorry for my absence last Friday. I don't know whether anybody met at either of the times (Nergiz).

I have another idea for a challenge but need to get my head around it first then I will blog about it and we can discuss... (Nergiz) It's got nothing do to with lesson planning but a lot of creativity (in the language class) :-)

Friday 17 July, 2009 11 am SLT/PST (6 pm GMT) every fortnight at this time . There are usually weekly meetings, but the times alternate.

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Agenda: Open

Who is planning to attend ?(Of course, you can also decide to attend spontaneously :-)

1.   Osna (Dennis)

2.   Pawlus (Pawel)

3.  Nagora (Nina Lyulkun) hopefully

4. Daffodil (Nergiz)  ---> Would one of you like to archive part of this page? There's a warning that it is too long. There is already one link to an archive at the end of this page but a new page could also be created. Thanks for helping!

Who attended:

  1. Dennis (Osna)
  2. Nergiz (Daffodil)
  3. Gavin (Dudeney)
  4. Nina (Nagora)
  5. Carol (Carolrb)
  6. Marisolde (Marisa)
  7. Shawn (Shawn)
  8. Antonella (Anna)
  9. Heike (Gwen)
  10. Pawel (Pawlus)
  11. Anooja (Ann)

Apologies

Helen (Karelia Kondor) - really sorry I can't come (I'm entertaining a former German assistant) but have recommended this group to two other language teachers - Patience (who is interested in acquiring land to teach English) and Sciatrice (a teacher friend who learns Italian with me on Monday evenings) who may be attending. [sorry - can't unbolden this!]

Account of meeting

We spent the first hour or so discussing Dogme in Dennis' Dome garden. Then, Shawn showed us his interactive playground scene (lovely) that he has built and some other scenes. (It's 3am in the morning here. This short account is all I  can manage. Feel free to add details - Nergiz)

A couple of images.

Discussing Dogme in Dogme Gardens

A corner of the playground in the sky that Shawn built for his son. (But SLExperiments members loved the slides and  see-saws, too.)  I was pleasantly surprised at how much everyone seemed to enjoy this.  To be frank, I thought everyone would find it all a bit childish, but I suppose I'm still imposing my RL expectations on SL.  It just goes to show you that SL does wonders at lowering students affective filters.

For those that are interested in making similar scenes, I want to point out that the above scene only took a few days to put together, because rather than build everything from scratch, I just found items on XStreet and pieced them together.  Also, a word of caution...  If you're planning on making Holodeck scenes yourself, make sure that all the items in your scene have COPY and MODIFY permissions set.  Otherwise, you can't load it into the Holodeck.  [Shawn 7/31/09]

Dogme (and Second Life)

First, thanks for being the first group to sit together on the seats in Dogme Gardens. And thanks for demonstrating that  it is possible to have a lively discussion in such surroundings. There is no telling if the environment - especially the red roses - facilitated and scaffolded talk. It would be good, though, if that were the case.

I'm going to create a new page here, Dogme, to contain some further remarks about Dogme, arising from the spontaneous, unscripted discussion in Dogme Gardens. (If anyone wants a copy, just let me know - Osnacantab).

  2.

  3.

Apologies:

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil) I can't promise to be there. I might be still in a meeting in SL or on my way to my offline weekend.
  2. "Osna'" (Dennis) Sadly, I'm unssure if I can make it either. I have a private lesson then. At most I might be able to pop in to greet anyone who is there.

----> Please, also join the SL group to receive and send notifications, updated scripts, free tools etc. Search for "SLExperiments language teachers" or send an IM to the admins, (mmventro Jewell, Daffodil Fargis, Wonderalicia Alturas) or someone you know is an officer or assistant to be invited.

Helen: Seeking advice on where I  can get/buy language games e.g. Scrabble, Boggle - though not teaching in SL, I can really see the potential for teens, and woudl like to collect examples to try out (well, that's the official reason .. I actually want to play them myself!!!)

Special Meeting - Holodeck Challenge Final Event

Saturday, 27 June, 2009 4am SLT/PST (11am GMT)

Dear SLExperiments members and members of the Osnagroup

The Holodeck Challenge lasted longer than we had originally planned, which was appreciated by many. Now, it is time to bring it to a close. SLExperiments and Osnagroup members participated in the challenge and we would like to bring you together for the final event. Therefore and to allow as many participants as possible to participate, we decided to meet on a Saturday afternoon.

We will meet on Saturday, at 11.00 am GMT (4am SLT) in the EduNation 3-hour Sandbox.

All members, whether you have something prepared or not are welcome to participate.

Those who have built holodeck or Builder's Buddy scenes, can show there scenes and tell or demonstrate how they think their scene could be used for a language lesson in Second Life.

If you haven't built anything, you can participate by contributing your ideas for scenes and/or lessons which you might even come up during the event :)

We don't want to make this event too formal but here is what we would like to do:

1. Welcoming everybody + briefly telling what the challenge was about
2. Presentations of scenes and ideas
3. Discussion on the value of holodecks and similar tools for language learning and teaching (Do you think they are valuable tools or maybe not? Why/Why not?
4. Wrap up

We have no idea how many members have built scenes but even if it is only few, we will surely have a great time together and hopefully also get something out of it for our teaching practice.

Carol, Dennis and Nergiz

Summary:

(summary of the event)

I have created a new page for the Holodeck Challenge where you can add pictures of your scenes and where we can collect ideas that come up during the event and add to it later whenever we have new ideas. It would also be great to report there (or have links to reports) of how Holodecks have been used in a language session and how it went. Any more ideas about what to add and how to organise it are welcome.

Here is my blog post about the event. I have tried to summarize the ideas.

Friday, 26 June, 2009 7am SLT/PST (2pm GMT) every fortnight at this time

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Agenda:

Anything that comes up during the meeting. Be prepared to share, ask questions or for suggestions or advice.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

---> By the way, all wiki members have writing rights and you are very welcome to update this page if nobody else has done it. Others can, then, make changes or add information.

Who is planning to attend (of course, you can also decide to attend spontaneously :-)

  1. Susanna Nocchi (Su Nacht)

  2. Pete MacKichan (Ruddell Weatherwax) may be able to attend - I would be interested in a demo copy of Brainboard too.

  3. Helen hopes to lurk briefly (thanks to USB modem) to demo SL to visitors at workshop.  Hope that's OK!

  4.

 Who attended:

  1. Helen with workshop visitors!!!  Sorry for disturbing you Nergiz - I now have the landmark in my head!

You didn't disturb me at all, Helen. I'm just sorry I couldn't be there to say hello to your workshop participants (Nergiz)

Apologies:

  1. Nergiz - Can probably not attend
  2. Helen
  3. Simon - Good to see you all last meeting; can't make it this week.
  4. Edith - Will try my best to the Holodeck challenge between 2 planes in Singapore

Friday, 19 June, 2009 am 11 am SLT/PST (6 pm GMT) every fortnight at this time

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

From last week onwards (30Th May), we will schedule the early and late meetings fortnightly even if there is a holiday or conference, etc. The aim is to connect teachers, create bonds. So, you can put it in your calendar and let it remind you without having to check each week.

Agenda:

Anything that comes up during the meeting. Be prepared to share, ask questions or for suggestions or advice.

Nergiz: I would like to show you a new tool that I am a bit excited about (and I am rarely excited about tools in SL). It's a board that allows for collaborative writing and interactive tasks and is very easy to use. I have already used it in some of my classes but would like to try it with you and hear what you think about it. For those who are curious or cannot attend the meeting, there is information about it and some videos here.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Helen: Seeking advice on where I  can get/buy language games e.g. Scrabble, Boggle - though not teaching in SL, I can really see the potential for teens, and woudl like to collect examples to try out (well, that's the official reason .. I actually want to play them myself!!!)

  10. names? how can I access all of the names? via the chat log?

Yes, you can access names via the chat log. You can set the path where you want the chat log to be saved and which chats (local/IM) you want to have automatically saved in the preferences (Edit menu). I'm not logged in at the moment and tell you exactly which tab. Of course, you can also try to remember to copy the chat from the chat window before you log off after a session. (Nergiz)--Thanks (Robert)

Summary:

Session began with a discussion started by Dennis on how to align walls in SL. This can be tricky as the different perspecives do not always co-locate items. Further tips and suggestions welcome here: (See Nergiz's article on creating a tree on her blog).

Nergiz mentioned a video? article? with ten tips for building that she found was very well done.  Is there a link for this? -----> Top 10 Second Life Building Tips

Discussed the issue of student inability to access SL. Nergiz had a student who experienced losing audio every six minutes. Potential issues were discussed, including the seetings of the computer (Screen saver, Idle Mode) and DSL connection in the lab. Further troubleshooting tips welcome:

[please delete following if this addition not appropriate here as this is not strictly speaking part of the minutes .. it's what Helen tried but failed to communicate!! May be best in participants' feedback section?]: Last week, Helen/Karelia tried to help someone to change settings to prevent feedback: Tried to give path: volume control / options / properties / playback, check box for microphone in 'show the following volume controls' / in microphone column, check 'mute'. Sounds wrong I know, but putting the mute on the microphone in the PLAYBACK dialogue box (not the RECORDING dialogue box, because obviously you want the micrphone to record your voice) seems to stop the electrical signal from your own microphone being fed back through your own speakers / headphone a second later. However, failed to help this person as she was using Vista, and we could not locate the appropriate dialogue boxes. Help! ]

Ideas for providing recordings were discussed (two computers, two avatars, DSL/Cable reqd.--and still potential issues. Also issues with using Skype as a backchannel (dual audio demand from SL and Skype). Alternate VW's could also be used as a different venue--not as good perhaps. An additional idea would be to have a back up session ready to go in a platform like WIZiQ --it would require double prep, but if the session is a 'must go' for everyone, providing a live low tech alternative may offer at least the basic fulfillment of student expectations. It's also a good idea to be forthright about the possibility of 'cutting edge' technology not always working.

Nergiz demonstrated the use of the BrainBoard tool. Brainboard allows for participants to move items on an interactive whiteboard with four quadrants (think categorization activities). The tool also allows participants to add text to the whiteboard (great for brainstorming or organizing a text collaboratively). The voting feature wowed those in SL. (students would be able to vote on their favorite comment, idea, etc.) Text can be pre-loaded into the Brainboard and exported from the board to local chat, an email address or a web database. An additional board can be rezzed if one gets too cluttered--nice, and it should be possible to move items between the two--some technical issues here. In general, it is an interesting tool, but comes with a price tag--est. $40. Not on general release at the current time. It could do with some additonal features for that price perhaps, i.e the ability to suggest connections among the items on the whiteboard, add texture, vary the shape and size of the nodes and add pictures. [Rian]

BrainBoard feedback and Ideas of how to use it in class

(Please, list your feedback and your ideas of how to use the board in class here)

---> I talked with the creator of the BrainBoard and asked whether SLExperiments members could have a trial version of the tool and he agreed. If you are interested in a fully functional 30-day trial version of the BrainBoard, list your name here:

  1. Doug Canfield (Rockytop Berchot)
  2. Robert Squires (Rian Staheli)
  3. Mary Pinto (Mary Roussel)
  4. Helen (Karelia Kondor)
  5. James OReilly (Eurominuteman Jameson)
  6. Maru (mmvcentro Jewell)

-----> I've passed on the names in the list to the BrainBoard creator so you should receive your trial versions soon. (Nergiz)

I hope you can provide more feedback and ideas if you have your own trial version to test it fully.

This week the meeting started with introductions of members coming for the first time.

How to join groups in SL to be updated regarding the events/activities they carry out.

The deadline for the holodeck challenge is in 2 weeks (a more precise date on the way)

As the concept of holodecks is not easy to describe, we moved to the sanbox and Carol showed her holodecks

Sorry folks for the delay I have been really busy with RL :-) Here are the notes I could gather from the local chat. [Cyber]

1. Teaching on SL ideas:

  • Put students in groups to share 1 avatar, negotiate features (looks, habitat and actions) in the target language
  • Meet another class with same restrictions (4 students per avatar for e.g.) then work  1 to 1 avatar (= 8 students, 4 in each class) on project (data collection/ research on cultural aspects, book review, etc...) to be agreed between teachers
  • Create one student avatar and make several students take turn to use it
  • Use of action maze for maximum negotiation in target language (directions, orders, actions)

2. SL for newbies

3. Holodeck ideas and sandboxes

  • Horizon pro 5,000 Lindens to be able to make changes to the rooms according to CarolB Roux
  • Kip Yellowjacket @ Virtlantis is the person to contact to find out more about launchrooms
  • With the free buddy builders script there is not need to buy a holodeck (contact Nergiz and Carol for hte script)
  • Maru offered her place on Virtlantis to try things out and come with students: Maru's Cosy Place  http://slurl.com/secondlife/VIRTLANTIS/175/35/21

4. Carol's area course
  • Carol showcased her vocabulary tools to Rian
  • Carol played a video to introduce e-safety
  • Carol's course on E-Safety: June 16Th, 23Th, 30Th and July 7Th. 19:00 to 20:30 GMT/12:00 to 13:30 SLT

Friday, 29 May, 2009 7 am SLT/PST (2pm GMT)

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

This week, we are having the meeting at the earlier time because last week we couldn't meet due to WIAOC (which, btw, was worth every sleepless minute). If you didn't manage to attend, do check out the many recordings from the Elluminate as well as SL sessions.

From now on, we will schedule the early and late meetings fortnightly even if there is a holiday or conference, etc. This is so that you can put it in your calendar and let it remind you without having to check each week.

NOTE: Not being able to come to the Friday meetings does not mean you cannot meet at other times. One aim of the SLExperiment meetings and group (besides collecting and sharing resources and helping each other learn) is to connect teachers

Agenda:

Anything that comes up during the meeting. Be prepared to share, ask questions or for suggestions or advice.

Remember also, that it is nearly the end of May. So, the Holodeck Challenge will soon come to an end. If you need some help, ideas, freebies to use.... please, ask.

  11. Carolrb Roux (aka Carol)
  12. Marisolde Orellana
  13. Birgit Brautigan

Summary:

  • New and old members introduced themselves to each other.
  • The discussion started about the ammount of time required to set a language course, concensus agreed that it takes more time and effort in any venue to set a beginners course than to set one for more advancel levels.
  • Cyber Placebo mentioned that if we are interested in hooking up for ideas for French language we can visit http://www.victoria.ac.nz/llc ; you can find her e-mail adddress and a lot of other links for language learning online.

  • After talking about the names used instead of "Real Life" (RL) Dudeney Ge shared the following links to his blog: http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=196, http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=204, http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=216 http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=221,http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=225,http://slife.dudeney.com/?p=230
  • We were promted to talk about Holodecks, we noticed that it was hard to describe them with words so we moved to the Sandbox where Carol and Nergiz showed us the holodecks created so far for the challenge that closes at the end of May.
  • Everybody received a copy of the scripts and instructions. No one changed the channel in their scripts, we were close to the end of the meeting,  so when trying them please do so  to avoid any conflicts with others' scenes.
  • HollySue Wycliffe shared the link to her course on teaching in 2D virtual classrooms, which covers language teaching methodology, Intercultural communicative competence and technology related to these classrooms. She also described a bit of what she does with her LANCELOT students in Second Life.  There are fees involved, €560 for the course and 420 for the assessment.  http://www.lancelotschool.com
  • Dudeney Ge mentioned Trinity College only charges us €120 per participant for the assessment of  a similar course for teachers http://www.theconsultants-e.com/courses/trinityict/index.asp (The fee for the course itself is 995 euro.)

Glad to be back despite mic difficulties, I missed to hear to Dennis' voice. There won't be a meeting next week due to Webheads in Action Online Convergence (WIAOC09) activities. Many of them will be held in SL and Webheads Elluminate Vroom.  To check the schedule please visit WIAOC09 wiki and to have a deeper flavor of what's going on you can visit WIAOC09 Ning site.  Hope to see you there!  Maru (aka Mmvcentro)

No SLExperiments meeting. Well, at least not a normal one :-) The SLanguages2009 24-hour conference starts on Friday. The programme looks very interesting. You can find the schedule and participants packs in different locations on the three islands (e.g. amphitheatres) which include the schedule.

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21 (generally everywhere in EduNation)

This is NOT a notice for the next meeting (see below for that), but I wanted to catch you attention. Excuse me, please - and if you are not interested in a special event, STOP READING NOW.

Dennis (Osnacantab) writes:

--------------------------------

CHALLENGE HOLODECK: BE CREATIVE!  THINK OUT OF THE BOX!

CAUSE A GASP WITH WHAT COMES OUT OF YOUR BOX!

This is a preview. The official launch comes latter. Nergiz will inform you.

Nergiz has come up with a great idea and has already enthused Carol and me and a couple of other Osnagroup citizens who  happen to have picked up what is going on.

This is my working description of the project (my prose) , but I will have shown it to Nergiz and Carol before I post it to you. The offical version comes later.

This is a joint project of  SLExperiments and Osnagroup

It is a CHALLENGE – It is a HOLODECK challenge. – and it is also a LESSON PLANNING challenge. Finally, it is CHALLENGE to you and your skills and creativity.

The idea is that members of Osnagroup and members of SLexperiments as individuals,  pairs or in small groups design and build a holodeck for a specific lesson. (Carol has already started building shells, basic builds which can be added to or altered. She will make these available to people taking part in the challenge. Nergiz and Carol arre working on the problem of distribution right now.

The lesson plan will make it clear how the holodeck is to be used  i.e.  what language will be taught and/or  practiced with it.

On the principle of not asking anyone to do something you don’t do yourself, I’m planning to build a dogme holodeck – plus some comment about how it will be used. I can’t produce a lesson plan because dogme dogma does not allow lesson plans  . :-)

Although we haven’t asked  them yet,  Gavin and Nick and Graham may be the assessors  to see who wins the challenge.   For the prize we shall be seeking finds from  the EU and we are absolutely certain we shall not get any.

CHALLENGE will run from now until the end of May.  (It is assumed you will work on this project during the regular meeting times of Osnagroup/SLExperiments - and, of course, at any other time you wish.).

You will be kept informed of any changes, updates of information through the usual channels.

If it is neceesary to introduce any rules and regulations governing  CHALLENGE they are likely to be issued by Nergiz.

Osnacantab, born Dennis

Thanks for writing this up, Dennis!

Let me just add for now that 1. There are no rules or regulations and the the lesson plans can even be only ideas on how you could imagine your scene to be used. Hey, and please be creative, as Dennis says. Role-plays are fine but certainly not the only way of using holodecks.

  4. Misha (Michael)

  5. Eurominuteman (James)

  6. Erika (Heather)

  7. Mary (Mary)

  8. Nahira (Nahriam)

  9. Pawlus

New and old members introduced themselves to each other.

Shawn demonstrated his holodeck scene - a maze - and had a great idea on how to use it in a language class.

We talked about the holodeck challenge and everybody received a copy of the scripts and instructions. Everybody changed the channel in their scripts so there won't be any conflicts with others' scenes.

All participants can add their notes to this summary. Actually, I'd be happy if one of the participants in a meeting would volunteer to write a short summary and the complete the list of participants. Sharing work is what wikis are all about :-)

Friday, 24th April, 2009 11am SLT/PST (6pm GMT)

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Agenda:

1. SLExperiments - 1st anniversary is coming up. Would you like to celebrate? How? ... The future of SLExperiments: Help shape its future! What would you like to see/do/talk about in the meetings? What do you like/dislike/want to see in the wiki? What role would you like to have.

2. Anything you'd like to share, ask, ....

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil)

  2. Dennis (Osnacantab)

  3. Carolrb

  4. Faizu

  5. ??

  6. (Dorka)

This was another holodeck and Builder's Buddy script session. We practised building a simple scene with the BB script and talked some more about how to use it. This brought up the idea of sharing scenes and to challenge teachers to come up with lessons plans for those scenes. More about this soon.

Anything else to add?

YES!  This was a much more exciting session than the cool prose above indicates. Nergiz has made some of us hugely excited about holodecks  and their pedagogical possibilities in teaching foreign language. And I have learned to spell 'holodeck'.  Belonw are a few photo I took inworld during the session on 24 April.

[ I could not resize these snaps. If anyone can, feel free. This is a wiki. ]

Working on scripts of each object to be inserted before they are saved to the box

More work on the holodeck and its contents.

Has she opened a specialised flower shop?

  7. Misha (Michael)

Some of the participants were curious about holodecks and because they can't make it to the Osnagroup session about holodecks, we had a look at Carol's and my holodeck scenes. We discussed a bit how holodecks could be used in language teaching and came up with a couple of ideas (some of which depend on the permissions settings which we still have to find out about). The Builder's Buddy script was also mentioned but we had no time for it:

  • Describe a scene students are in

  • Give a description of a scene to students (notecard?) and groups build it. Then, compare and talk about the differences

  • Students build scenes collaboratively (or alone), then describe why they built it that way, etc.

I (Daffodil) asked for ideas to make reviewing discussion language more fun and SL-like. Some ideas where

  • A kind of information gap. One student has a dialogue with the phrases. The partner has 6 phrases. First student reads the dialogue without saying the phrases and 2nd student selects from his phrases the one that fits.

  • Cards on the floor with the categories (agreeing, asking for clarification, etc). Students are given a phrase and they have to walk to the correct category the phrase belongs to.

  • Speed conversation: Students have to use as many of the phrases as they can in a short discussion.

  • Students are given three phrases in IM or in a notecard. Nobody knows which phrases the others have. In a discussion they have to try and use all of them.

  2. Dudeney Ge

     3.  Dennis (Osnacantab)

     4.  Carol (Carolrb Roux)

Summary

1.   It was an informal meeting, but some important points were made.

1.1  Gavin repeated that he enjoyed attending as a way of relaxing having spent the week working in RL.

1.2  He observed that lists and forums come and go. This week, for example, it could be that there were few present because they were working or preparing for Easter. Perhaps, on the other hand, the forum had served its purpose. The best thing to do was to leave thing as they are and see what happens.

1.3   Daffodil noted that no-one makes entries on the wiki.

1.4   Dennis thought that no-one uses the accopanying list, either.

1.5   Daffodil explained that the potentially confusing alternating times for meetings was to give members from other time zones the chance to take part periodically rather than not at all.

1.6   Dennis thought definitely not for the first time that this is a built-in difficulty with synchronicity and, as in our case, the wish for our avatars to be present in SL at the same time. Email lists, of course, can enjoy the benfits of asynchronicity.

1.7   Gavin listed who was probably taking part in the 24-hour congress/workshop shortly due to take place. It was somewhat surprising to note who was not taking part. (Gavin circulated a draft program by email today).

Please feel free to edit this summary if something was left out or misrepresented.

Next meeting

This will be Friday 17 April at the alternative time. (Daffodil, perhaps you can add the time to these notes).

Friday, 27th March, 2009 11 am SLT/PST (6pm GMT) (we are alternating times, read message in Google Groups)!!!

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

Agenda:

For quite some time, we had an agenda. But often we would not cover much of it and kept copying topics to the next meeting. Also, sometimes, there were too many ideas for one meeting and sometimes very few items. So, we thought we'll try a different approach, the 3 slots (see below). Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work either. We spend most of the time during the meetings for showing new tools and for socialising. Although, this is perfectly fine, some of us, including me, would like to do or talk about things more language learning/teaching related sometimes. So, as Dennis asked below (see last week's meeting), I am wondering, now that we have several new members, whether an agenda would be welcome. What are your thoughts?

1. Language teaching in SL (SL pedagogy, skills, grammar, vocabulary, etc)

2. Tools and SL skills (questions, demonstrations)

3. Field trips (suggestions)/Guest speakers/ Presentations by members

I have created a group in SL that you can join for news, reminders and to find other SLExperiments members in case you need help or a telport. Please, join "SLExperiments Language Teachers". We will also use this group to communicate during the meetings (voice and text), hand out notecards and LMs, share free tools and teleport during field trips. This is good practise and a demonstration of what the group feature can be used for. (Nergiz Kern).

Who is planning to attend (of course, you can also decide to attend spontaneously :-)

  1. Nergiz (Daffodil) - I'm thinking of sending an invitation out to people in the IATEFL forum who expressed interest in SL.

  2. Pete (Ruddell / Pete) - Sounds like a good idea

  3. Simon (Frith) - Sorry not able to make it but have a great meeting.  Hope to come another time.

  4. Steve (Shoshone) Maybe...

Friday, 6th March 2009 7 am SLT/PST (3pm GMT) New Time

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/176/93/21

I apologize profusely for putting a question (?) here, but wanted to see if there was a set agenda. I am at the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT), which is the Southern US regional arm of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).  A group of educators here from around the South would like to see all of us in action and have a chance to converse with some of you about your experiences. I have managed to get them to agree to meet from around about SL 8:15 to SL 8:45, so if I could have about the last 5-10 minutes of the allotted time, and if some of you could perhaps even stay after to respond to questions, I think it would be a great way to get noobs to join the ranks! Of course, we would have to be prepared for the vagaries of conference agenda and technology anomalies, but I figure you are all quite used to that!

Hope that this is agreeable to all of you.... (Doug/Rochytop)

Doug, we had set agendas but have changed that and have three slots for Language teaching in SL, Tools and Field trips instead. I don't know whether anybody else has special plans for this week. I had planned to ask whether the group would like to play "Word Up", a word game which Gavin (Dudeney) created inspired by a TV game show if I remember correctly. But this was only an idea. So, we can easily adjust to your conference schedule as mentioned above. If you'd like us to do something special like showcase some tools, or show them around some places, let us know. If any of the members was planning to show something or talk about something specific let us know here. If not, they will see us sitting in our comfy bean bags chatting about more or maybe less language related issue :-) (Nergiz/Daffodil).

Times and the wishes of members change. Could it be that the present membership might find an agenda hepful rather than restirictive?  Osna

Summary:

Unfortunately, I noted no names (and I'm getting bad at names) and the chat log continues to let me down. Which is a pity, because we had one of the most stimulating, interesting conversations I've experienced at SLexperiments. As always the weather was warm :- we had (at least) two writers with us, Lynn (probably) from Japan, who was going to do communal cleaning the next morning and we were still talking at 0100 Japanese time,  - Lynn (if it was her) writes children's books and the other writer who outed himself (there might have been others) writes  travel books and teaches Russian in a prestigious college in the US. Someone else taught (French and?), also in a college, I think, and there were a couple of people, one from Barcelona and other from somewhere western European. In front of me was an avatar, male, in a suit, who reavelaed that he was invovled with an electronic magazine that was contemplating having future editions with videos, for example, embedded in the page. He was especially interested in finding out whether there was anyone present who was interested in writing about teaching in SL. There was no-one present who felt they had enough (or any) experience, and it was a pity that Daffodil could not be present. (She had a second meeting which, as it happens, did not take place.)

Apart from the publishing , we discussed pedagogy in SL, the fact that there seems to be still relatively little language teaching going on in SL, writing and SL and other matters. I apologise for the absence of names, but hope you can recognise enough here to write in with comments.

Until next week, I hope.   Osnacantab (Dennis) Nesterov.

A last point.  There is a Google (not Yahoo) list which is associated with this Wiki. It has not been used for ages, and it could be that you are not members, because you do not know about it. I'll find it insert it here.

Actually, there is a link in the sidebar, but I've move the information a few centimetres closer.

Lynn explained of a very nice tool she used in a class (or was planning to use in a class). unfortunately she could not share it with us because the script she got form a scripter and friend was no-trans. The tool consisted in 3 dices with 3 different functions that could be used for asking questions.

By chance I stumbled upon something that could resemble them, and I would like to share them wuth all the SLexperimenters: you can buy them here

Note from Lynn/Barb: the first set of dice (item 1259731) is EXACTLY the same dice I showed at the meeting. Kae is the designer who gave them to me, and has now put them up for sale. If any of you wish to purchase, I will be happy to give you the 8 textures I loaded into my dice (the question words, and then the question mark and period), since I already paid to upload them, and they are transferable :-)

P.S.  Just heard from Kae, and she has the dice set on sale in world, too, at http://slurl.com/secondlife/FurNation%20Alpha/177/44/26/ They're L$60 for the set of three die, and they can be re-textured to use for various lessons.

Summary:

I arrived late, so hope someone will correct or augment this summary. Most of the session as I heard it was devoted to a fascinating account from Lynn on how she and a small group of people had planned and carried through a lesson in SL in the context of the EVO VWLL2009 workshop currently running. There was also a corpse at one stage, and some blood, but I rather think that was part of a different project.  There was talk of various materials being uploaded - I think to Ning . so look not here, but elsewhere. (Dennis)

Dennis, the dead body was there because before I explained of some props I produced in order to give an Italian class on doctors and illnesses. http://italianiamo.wordpress.com/2009/02/20/dottore-dottore-mi-fa-male-qui/

I'm actually still working on them i my (scarce) spare time, and the presentation helped me to see some problems and (later) find a solution.

By the way: I'm looking for a scipt with drippin blod or something similar (a tatoe could work), does anybody know where I can find it?

Summary:

We talked a bit about Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) and learned that Carol has written a useful booklet about them and Gizmo had a successful IWB training session. Some other web 2.0 tools were mentioned, too. Juniper told us a bit about her work with teenagers. Tim, who I think was with us for the first time, teaches Russian in the US. In the last half hour, Calisto joined us and we tested a HUD that he has created. It's called Pepperino (if I remember correctly) and is meant to contain useful tools for students. At the moment, it has a radar to scan for avatars in the vicinity and a dictionary for Spanish/English/Spanish. Calisto would be happy about suggestions of other useful tools/features to add to it.

The meeting starting trying to get participants in. The SIM was having trouble and some participants were stuck in a Help Island, teleport and login in from Webheads HQ page were no avail.  Sorry Tamara Ashton (Jennifer) :-(

We moved on to listen to Gwen's moderator experience with Holly during a live session which requiered a lot of back channeling and multitasking due to audio recording issues. We continued to talk a bit about funny experiences inside SL, like loosing your head or clothes.  Danic shared her experiences at the Italian University Online where they are writing a crime story in SL, the Agency is INDIRE.  Gwen shared the link to Virtual Worlds Org: http://www.steppingintovirtualworlds.org/.  Shoshone Zessinthal posted the location of my photos of Boracay, I was sad to hear that it doesn't exist anymore:  http://tinyurl.com/dbrlfd. Scottlo Scorbal: shared a nice tutorial resource in English from Mohax http://imohax.blip.tv/. Gwen, revealed herself a a celebrity fan, we toyed with names of a SLebrity we would like to meet and Gwen came up with and invitation to meet Noam Chomsky? This is the link to sign up if you are interested:

http://www.doodle.com/2zq5gmirgwstg33g

During the middle and after the SLebrity's discussion, we braistormed about how to evaluate ourselves after a course. More than 16 questions, from the moderator point of view, came up  to evaluate create a 10 questions survey.

Nergiz is fully occupied running an EVO  LVWLL session tonight, and I'll be assisting.  It's unlikely she will be able to attend the SLexperiments meeting. I'll try to look in, though, but I shall be a little late.

1.   Dennis aka Osnacantab

There is an interesting exhibition, part of the EVO VWLL course, that can be seen from where we meet. It is worth flying across the water and having a look at it.

As far as I recall a few days later:

1.   Gavin told us about the next stage of his travels, which was to begin the next day. It was interesting to hear what he takes with him - laptop (of course), video camera, sound recorder, a collection of battery chargers.

2.  Carol arrived a bit later and told us about the horrors of travelling by train in the UK, but also about the exhibitiion she had visited in London - an exhibition presenting teaching programmes of various kinds in the field of language learning?

3.   I don't remember Nergiz saying much, and I don't recall saying much, either. Can you believe that?.

4.  We regretted Steve's absence, but I understand he was at a funeral.

Friday, 9th January 2009 11 am SLT/PST (7pm GMT)

Meeting Point: http://slurl.com/secondlife/EduNation%20II/168/95/21

Agenda: No agenda anymore. We will have 3 or 4 slots and then see what comes up in that particular slot. Normally, every slot will be around 30 minutes, so 90 min core meeting time. Those who have time and want can stay longer for socializing, etc. Let's see how this works out. (Nergiz)

1. Language teaching in SL (skills, grammar, vocabulary, etc - questions, discussion)

  1. Nergiz Kern (Daffodil Fargis)

  2. Dennis -  Osnacantab Nesterov, born Dennis Newson

  3. Steve (Shoshone) - I may attend. But I have a stack of very important stuff to do... So don't be surprised if you don't see me. Sorry!

  4.

Attendees:

  1. Nergis Kern

  2. Gavin Dudeney

  3. Dennis Newson

  4. Carolrb Roux

  5. A 2nd. Gavin avatar (Said nothing)

  6. A 2nd.  Carol  avatar. sat meekly and said nothing

.

Summary

1.  Gavin told us of his forthcoming travels and how he had been looking closely at his workshops for Saudi Arabia to make sure they contained no inappropriate material.

2.  He also demonstrated his new media player, demonstrating that if a device does not work at first, remain calm and fiddle with it until it does.

.3.  He showed a video of kids dancing around the world, and explained that he uses it as an opener for all kinds of workshops because it is such a happy film and not likely to offend anyone.

4.   Carolrb Roux  described to us a course that she began only last night. She was very pleased because the ITT teachers for whom it was put on enjoyed it and said they had learned a lot.

5.   It seems that a big problem in the UK is that local councils do not permit access to programs like You Tube and others and are reluctant to provide many funds because of the poor press SL gets almost daily. Carol  was not allowed to use SL to teach her course.

6.  Dennis said he had not had expectation of SLexperiments, but he had hopes that perhaps it would provide a platform for doing joint projects.

7.  Gavin did not think SLexperiments had developed such a character, though he could be wrong. He himself , spending most of his days on SL solving his own or other people's problems, liked to come for social reasons and have a chat. He didn't think it likely that SLexperiments would carry out research, though it was certainly possible that one or two people might meet each other there and do research under another aegis.

8.   Carol gave us theslurl for the Bayeux tapestry, and highly recommended it. http://slurl.com/secondlife/TeesLife/142/174/79  (Plus a walk when you get there).

Hi all
I've created an archive of the weekly meetings together with all the comments. This will hopefully make navigation on the page easier (less scrolling) and help avoid unintentional deletion of previous entries when adding new content (Please, be careful. This happened several times and can happen easily when copying and pasting).

In the sidebar, you will only find the link to the latest "Weekly Meetings". I will not add a link to the archive there but you can find the link to the archive at the end of this page and in the list of pages.

Please, please, please, be careful not to delete content when editing the page. It has happened again and although older versions are stored it is time-consuming to find the version which the content that was deleted and I cannot simply revert to after the page has been edited several times.

Is there any possibility of changing the time to a few hours earlier? I would love to attend these with you guys but 7pm GMT is 3am in HK/4am in Tokyo .. is 3pm GMT or 10pm GMT a possibility?

Nick, I have been thinking about how to accommodate our participants from further east of whom we have several now. At the beginning, I was the one furthest east :) . We can either change the time of our Friday meeting or start a second one with a time more suitable you guys. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I'd like to hear what others think. 10pm GMT is midnight for me but 3pm GMT could work.

Hello all. Did the meeting on Friday actually happen? I went to Edunation using the "meeting point" link above, but couldn't find anyone - maybe I was in the wrong place? Hope to catch up with you all some other time.

Hi Simon
Sorry to hear you were alone. As you know, I had another meeting at the same time. Some participants came an hour later. There must have been some confusion with the time because the US has already switched to summer time but Europe hasn't yet. Our meeting time for this week is 11 am SLT (PST) / 6pm GMT. I am planning to be there.

I'm sorry! I had meant to be there, but ended up on the phone with some medical stuff back in the US. I'll miss this next meeting, but wish I could be there (as always!). Hope you have fun!

Friday, 15 May, 2009 11am SLT/PST (6pm GMT) Meeting.

Nergiz , i am very interested in the use of the holodeck and would love to join this session. I am on the verge of volunteering to run a month long orientation to SL and will be running through all of the comments at this site among others in attempt to get up to speed. Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the meetings on Fridays. Have you considered the possibility of recording the sessions. This might be asking a little much. Anyway, I appreciate all your work (Alicia's Dennis and others) in putting these valuable resources together ---Thanks.

Robert

First found out about SLexperiments through the SLanguages conf last week which was fabulous..stimulating sessions, new ways. Also interested in holodecks but Friday 11am time slot is my 3.30am in Australia so not practical. Nergiz, you spoke about more congenial times..just adding my bit!

@ Robert You are welcome to join the holodeck challenge. The more the merrier. You might want to have a look at our VWLL material that we used for the EVO VWLL session. If Fridays don't suit you, you might want to join the Osnagroup which Dennis started for the VWLL members. They meet Thursdays at 7 or 8pm GMT. Ask Dennis for more information. They are also participating in the holodeck challenge. Unfortunately, we cannot record our sessions but we try to provide short summaries on this page.

@geon Sorry about the time. We have more members from Asia and Australia, that's why we we alternate times now. So that you have a chance to at least attend every other week. Next time, we will meet at 7am SLT/2pm GMT. Hope you can make it then. This might be in two weeks because next week is WIAOC2009: http://wiaoc09.pbworks.com/

I get a warning that this page is getting too long. Last year, I archived the page including comments and placed a link to the archive at the end of this page. If we don't want to preserve the comments on this page, we could simply cut the entries up until March or April (every quarter?) and paste them to the archive or create a new archive page for 2009.
Anybody know of a better way? Anybody willing to do the archiving this time? Would be much appreciated.
